Lately, the world market price of wheat has been on the rise as have fuel prices. This puts increasing pressure on consumers and business owners alike. Our correspondents went out to assess the impact of increasing wheat prices on the public in Israel. The current large increase in the cost of wheat and raw materials in the world's markets has hit manufacturers, as can be expected. But it's consumers in the lower social strata who carry most of this burden. Israel is a case on point. Avi Ushinsky runs a bakery in the town of Rishon. He explains [Avi Ushinsky, Bakery Manager]: "A family whose diet is composed mainly of bread, and up till now paid around 8 or 9 Israeli Shekels per loaf, cannot all of a sudden pay 20 shekels. So we absorb the increases as much as we can allow ourselves, and try to improvise." The quality of products has gone down as a direct result of cheaper substitutes found by consumers. [Avi Ushinsky, Bakery Manager]: "One can say that we fight for every grain of flour." Stress is being felt by bakers and their clients as well. The bakeries are only a link in the chain. [Amos Taute, Pensioner]: "The higher cost of bread and other basic foods has a very bad impact on my life because I am diabetic, so I have to eat special bread, which is expensive, and I have 25 grandchildren who come to visit me and I have to feed them with bread and vegetables ...
